The bed in the bedroom interior is the main element on which the quality of sleep and the atmosphere in general depend. The design concept of the entire room is built around the sleeping area, and the rest of the furniture, textiles, and decor are selected to match it. Therefore, many requirements are placed on the bed: it must be soft, comfortable, beautiful, and functional. The correct placement of the furniture structure in the room also plays an important role. To ensure a comfortable, healthy sleep, you should find out how to choose a good bed and where it is best to place it.

Why it is important to choose the right bed for your interior

As a rule, the bedroom is the only place in the apartment where a person can truly relax. For this reason, not only the functionality of the bed is important, but also the aesthetic side of the issue. A calming environment helps you get a good night's sleep and get up in a good mood in the morning.

When selecting and placing a bed, you should take into account every detail: color, size, dimensions, environmental friendliness of the materials from which the product is made. Making mistakes in the process of decorating a bedroom is highly undesirable. For example, if you place your bed in front of a bright accent wall, your eyes will get tired. Another common mistake is ill-conceived lighting. A downward-facing ceiling light above the headboard disturbs sleep, and even a switched-off light fixture can be perceived as visual clutter.

Sizes and shapes of beds

The first thing to do is decide on the size and shape of the bed.

Size

The range of modern beds includes:

  • Single models with a width of 70 to 100 cm are a suitable option for teenagers and guests.

  • "Lorry", the width of which varies from 100 to 150 cm.

  • Double designs measuring 160-180 cm.

  • King size beds 200 cm wide.

  • Custom models with a diameter of 220 cm or more - they are suitable for creating original interiors in spacious bedrooms and families in which a small child likes to sleep with his parents.

When choosing the length, the optimal figure is considered to be 15 cm higher than the height of the sleeping person. As for the height, 45-60 cm will be enough for a comfortable sleep, taking into account the mattress. The size of the bed should also take into account individual characteristics: age, weight, health status, position in which the owners prefer to sleep. Elderly people with joint and back problems find it more comfortable to lie down and get up from high beds. For short people and children, designs up to 30 cm high are optimal.

Shape

In the classic version, the bed has a rectangular shape. The rectangular design, which can have compact or impressive dimensions, is suitable for rooms with any layout. Rectangular beds are often equipped with headboards, spacious storage drawers, built-in cabinets and other useful options. You will also be pleased with the variety of choice, as well as the wide range of prices - the buyer can choose a budget product or give preference to a luxurious designer model.

Fans of non-standard interior design can consider other forms of beds:

  1. Round ones are a good choice for spacious bedrooms. Round beds fit into both classic and modern styles, but bedding and bedspreads for them have to be made to order.

  2. Oval - oval-shaped beds, comfortable and without sharp corners, are good for small children.

  3. Unusual shapes. Beds with a heart shape or other unusual configuration help realize the most daring design ideas.

There are also corner beds with two additional sides - they look interesting in the interior and make it possible to rationally use the bedroom space.

Frame and its design features

The basis of the bed is the frame - this is the main element that bears the entire load. Externally, the frame is a box standing on supports - backs or legs. Models with legs look visually lighter, but the legs tend to break, and beds of this type sometimes creak. Beds with supporting headboards are more reliable and stable; they look solid in the interior.

Since the service life and comfort of the bed depend on the quality of the frame, special attention must be paid to it. The presence of other elements (footboards, built-in compartments) is optional, but these parts ensure maximum functionality of the design.

Which material to choose

Another important stage is the choice of frame material. Wooden bases are considered a universal option - parts of any shape and size can be cut from solid wood. A wooden bed in the interior is distinguished by its impeccable appearance, pleasant aroma, and ability to regulate the microclimate. But since a wooden bed is an expensive pleasure, cheaper analogues are often used as an alternative:

  • Chipboard is a budget material used in the production of the simplest models. The disadvantage of chipboard is that it cannot be used to make parts of complex shapes: curved headboards, carved legs.

  • MDF. MDF beds are affordable, moisture resistant, last a long time, but are a bit heavy. If frequent rearrangements are planned, it is better to abandon such a bed in favor of laminated chipboard or light wood (spruce, pine, cedar).

Beds with a base made of welded metal have also proven themselves to be excellent. Metal products are durable, reliable, and their original appearance is preserved for decades. Forged beds look especially elegant in the interior - models with openwork design are at the peak of popularity today.

One of the trends in interior fashion is beds with upholstery around the perimeter - looking at such a bed, you just want to be in the soft embrace of Morpheus. As an upholstery material, we can recommend velor - a wear-resistant fabric, noble in appearance and pleasant to the touch. Velor is aesthetic, resistant to sunlight, elastic - it will not deform or wear out even on curved parts of the bed. If the family has pets and you need an inexpensive, practical design, you can choose a bed upholstered in flock, jacquard or microfiber.

Colors of beds and their meaning

The quality of a night's rest is directly affected by the color of the bed. When choosing a color scheme, you need to take into account not only the compatibility of the shade of the bed with the overall scheme, but also the influence of color on a person’s well-being. Here are a few options that are considered the most successful:

  1. Gray is an excellent choice if you want to decorate a noble and discreetly elegant interior.

  2. Shades of gray. Gray-beige, gray-blue, lilac-gray, smoky and other shades of gray (there are more than two hundred of them) have a positive effect on the emotional state, soothe and relax. For a bedroom whose windows face north, it is advisable to choose light colors and midtones. A bed in dark tones: slate, anthracite will look good in a sunny bedroom. Dark shades bring a touch of glamor to the bedroom interior, and a dark gray bed can act as a noticeable accent.

  3. Creme brulee. A bed made in calm and eye-pleasing shades of creme brulee is one of the best options for creating a stylish, harmonious design. Cream tones are appropriate in a children's room, as well as in a romantic bedroom design. This stylistically neutral color will not begin to tire even after a few years, and if it is chosen from the rich color palette, no one can blame the owners for lack of taste.

  4. Pink. A pink bed is good not only in children's rooms - it will certainly appeal to both sentimental people and married couples who love romance. Of all the shades of this multifaceted color, it is recommended to choose delicate pastel colors - excessive brightness can cause a feeling of anxiety.

  5. Blue is a color that is associated with tenderness, purity, and coolness. A blue bed in a bedroom interior creates a serene atmosphere; besides, blue harmonizes perfectly with both pastel shades and rich colors.

  6. Blue is the color of nobility and strict respectability. It helps you fall asleep faster, and dirt will not be visible on the blue background.

  7. Green is a color that evokes confidence and a sense of calm. Green goes best with white shades: a bed in emerald, mint, pistachio tones will fit perfectly into a soft white bedroom interior.

Although bedroom beds are usually decorated in soothing colors, experiments with rich shades are not prohibited. The focal point of the interior composition can be a yellow bed, enlivening and effectively transforming the atmosphere. Red upholstery or bed frame awakens bright emotions - this model is suitable for passionate natures. The purple color of the bed improves sleep and helps get rid of irritability, the main thing is to use it in moderation, since excess purple is tiring.

Bed base options

The base of the bed is the bed that holds the mattress. This important part of the bed can have various designs.

Slats

Lamels are flexible slats made of plastic or different types of wood: beech, oak, walnut, birch. The thickness of the lamellas is 6-10 mm, the width is approximately 60-70 mm. The lamellas are located at the same distance from each other (65-85 mm) and are fixed to the frame with special lamella holders. The number of slats depends on the size of the bed. On a single design there can be 10-15, on large models - 30 or more.

The main advantage of beds with slats is a pronounced orthopedic effect. Under the weight of the person’s body, the crossbars gently bend, ensuring the correct position of the spine and proper rest. The more slats a bed has, the greater the dynamic load it can withstand.

Solid sheet base

Beds with a solid sheet base have a flat bed made from sheets of plywood. The plywood surface is treated with a special protective compound and laid on the frame or attached to the frame. It is believed that beds with a sheet base are inferior to their slatted counterparts due to insufficient ventilation and the inability to distribute weight evenly. However, many manufacturers make holes in the sheets to allow air circulation, and a high-quality high mattress will eliminate the need to sacrifice comfort.

Beds with storage system and lifting mechanism

Buying a bed with pull-out compartments will help solve the problem of lack of storage space. Access to the drawers is via a lifting mechanism - a real lifesaver for small bedrooms. The most budget products are equipped with manual and spring mechanisms - you will have to make some effort to fold and unfold the bed. Improved bed models are equipped with gas lift shock absorbers: even a teenager can easily handle such a system.

Choosing a place for a bed in the bedroom: general recommendations

When choosing a bed and a place for it in the bedroom, it is worth considering some more recommendations:

  • Beds can be equipped with mattresses or sold without them. Buying a bed with a mattress is justified if the buyer trusts the brand, and the seller is ready to provide detailed information about the characteristics of the mattress: spring block, filling material.

  • A good place to place the bed is against the wall opposite the entrance. Round beds and other beds of non-standard shapes are often installed in the center, the main thing is that living conditions allow it.

  • It is permissible to place the bed with the back to the window only in spacious bedrooms. In other cases, such an arrangement will make it difficult to move and reduce the functionality of the living space.

  • If the bed is located near the wall, it can have a small headboard or do without one at all. In the first case, it is better to place the bed with the head of the room against the wall: this calms you down and gives you a feeling of security. If such an arrangement is not possible, you should move the bed close to tall furniture.

  • It is advisable that the bed can be approached from both sides. If possible, it is recommended to place bulky furniture (large chests of drawers, wardrobes) in other places.

  • If the bedroom has sloping walls, the optimal solution would be to purchase a low bed or a bed without a frame. An interesting type of frameless bed is the Japanese futon. This model is a mattress that is placed on a wooden pallet and, if necessary, can be transformed into a sofa.
